Barden Companies Inc. Named Company of the Year
Gary, Ind., May 22, 2003 Black Enterprise magazine publisher Earl G. Graves Sr. announced yesterday that his magazine has named Barden Companies Inc. its 2003 "Company of the Year."
Black Enterprise lists its annual top 100 African American-owned businesses in the publication's 31st Annual Report on Black Business. The June report is the authoritative ranking of the nation's largest black-owned businesses and recognizes the following four categories of achievement: company of the year, auto dealer of the year, advertising agency of the year, and financial services company of the year. This elite group has used highly innovative methods to cut costs, diversify product lines, and acquire companies at competitive prices despite the current tough times.
Barden Companies Inc., with 2002 revenues of $341 million, is wholly owned by Don H. Barden of Detroit and is the parent company of The Majestic Star Casino, LLC, which owns and operates Majestic Star Casino in Gary, Ind., and, through its wholly owned affiliate, Majestic Investor Holdings, LLC, three Fitzgeralds casinos in Tunica, Miss., Black Hawk, Colo., and Las Vegas, Nev.
Barden is the first and only African American to wholly own a national gaming company and the first to own a Las Vegas casino hotel.
"I was honored to receive this award from such a prestigious publication as Black Enterprise magazine," Barden said. "My philosophy is that 'it's not about I and me, it's about Us and We.' I've got a great team of more than 4,000 employees who have helped this company achieve what we've been able to achieve. I accept this award on behalf of all of us."
The complete BE 100s report can be found in the June issue of Black Enterprise, on newsstands May 27.
Majestic Star and Fitzgeralds casinos cater primarily to the value conscious middle-market drive-in slot customer, offering great service, the most popular slots and table games as well as top-notch food and accommodations at an affordable price. The four casinos feature approximately 4,300 slots, 110 table games and 1,145 hotel rooms.
