Gephardt Names Barden as National Finance Co-Chair

Washington, D.C. - Rep. Dick Gephardt this week named Don H. Barden as a National Finance Co-Chair to help him run a competitive race for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. Barden was an early supporter of former President Bill Clinton and is one of the largest African-American donors to the Democratic National Committee.

"I am privileged to have Don's support and honored that he agreed to such an important role in this campaign," said Gephardt. "The support of good friends like Don will help provide me with the resources necessary to effectively argue for bold, new ideas that will return this country to economic prosperity. Together, we're going to fight for an America where our economy is strong and our families more secure."

Barden is owner, Chairman and CEO of Barden Companies, Inc, the Majestic Star Casino, Fitzgeralds Casino Hotels, Waycor Development Company and Barden International, Inc. Mr. Barden is the only African-American to wholly own a national casino company.

As President of the United States, Gephardt has pledged to:

  • Scrap the vast majority of Bush tax cuts to provide high-quality health coverage to everyone who works in America, stimulating one of the biggest sectors of our economy.
  • Create a single pension plan that follows you from the moment you're born to the moment you retire ensuring economic security and economic growth.
  • Create a brand new Teacher Corps, modeled on the ROTC, to recruit 2.5 million well-trained teachers by the end of the decade.
  • Fight for universal pre-school for every child in every community in this nation.
  • Launch a major expansion of after-school care across the country, to reduce crime and help working parents protect their kids.

Other Dick Gephardt 2004 National Finance Co-Chairs include: Leo Hindery, Jr., New York, NY; Marsha J. Murphy, Kansas City, MO; Steven J. Stogel, St. Louis, MO; Steven Wilson, Lake Forest, IL.
