June 22, 2001 - Majestic Star "Walks" Away With Top Awards - Local Charity Benefits From Casino Efforts
Buffington Harbor, Ind. - Majestic Star Casino was a major sponsor during Northwest Indiana Sickle Cell Foundation's 2nd Annual Fun*Run*Walk-a-thon.
Twenty staff members representing Majestic formed a team to walk, along with two runners, one of which finished in 2nd place in his age category. The "Star Walkers" were the recipients of three awards: the top team, the team that raised the most money, and the team with the most walkers.
"Our staff was excited to participate in the run and walk-a-thon, everyone worked really hard," said Chareice White, community relations manager for Majestic Star Casino. "The staff members also sponsored a weekly bake sale in the employee dining room at Buffington Harbor to raise additional funds for Sickle Cell."
Hundreds of participants, volunteers and committee members joined forces at Marquette Park to create awareness, generate money and just to have a great time with family and friends. Congressman Pete Visclosky stopped by to show support and to lend a helping hand for this very worthy cause.
Sickle Cell is a disease of the blood that occurs in approximately one of 500 African American babies. The Sickle Cell trait is carried in the genetic make-up, although its not restricted to one group. People in many ethnic groups can have the sickle cell trait or disease.
Majestic Star Casino joined other corporate sponsors which included the Post Tribune, Mercantile Bank, Real Protection Inc., Lamar Advertising Company, Coca-Cola, City of Gary, The Lake County Commissioners, Tugtel Communications and White River Environmental Partners.
Proceeds will benefit the many programs of Northwest Indiana Sickle Cell Foundation.
