June 22, 2001 - Majestic Program Salutes Gary Fifth Grade Students - Three Winners Received Major Prizes
Buffington Harbor, Ind. - Majestic Star Casino held a luncheon at Indiana University for the top performing students in the Majestic's Star Student Program.
Two hundred sixteen students combined from Locke, Aetna & Norton Elementary School participated in the program which was co-sponsored by the Gary Accord Communities in Schools. Forty of the most improved students selected by their teachers were invited to the luncheon.
The Majestic Star Student Program was designed to help teachers motivate Gary's fifth grade students toward progressive achievement. Students participated by setting academic, attendance and community service goals and then striving to meet them.
Some local community leaders joined forces to select three of the most outstanding students, all three winners were representatives from Locke School. Mr. Harold Arnold, principal of Locke School was excited that his school was the recipient of all three prizes.
Jacquis Vaughn was 3rd place winner of a $1,000 savings bond Tyeesha Williams, 2nd place winner won a brand new Gateway Computer printer and accessories and Darren Murphy took home the grand prize which was a trip for three to Disney in Orlando, Florida. Darren Murphy will have the opportunity to take his parent Darren Murphy Sr. and teacher Mrs. Rochelle Sims on the trip. Pam Am Airlines, Gateway Computers and the Radisson Hotel were all co-sponsors for the program.
Students who did not to attend the luncheon received a pizza party at their school sponsored by the Gary Accord. Jef Bauer, vice president of Marketing for Majestic Star Casino and Chareice White, community relations manager presented special certificates to each student.
