September 25, 2001 - Majestic Walks & Runs for AIDS
Casino was major sponsor of annual event
Buffington Harbor, Ind. - Majestic Star Casino staff members joined forces to form a team for the Chicago Run & Walk for AIDS. Weekly bake sales at the casino were held along with collecting pledges to help raise money for the worthy cause.
The funds raised from the event benefit the AIDS Foundation of Chicago. The organization strives to make a difference in the lives of those affected by this disease. It's goal is to fund community-based prevention and care programs, develop a comprehensive system of HIV/AIDS care, educate government officials and provide information to the general public on HIV/AIDS issues.
Twenty years ago in 1981 medical professionals first recognized the disease that would become known as "Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome" or AIDS. At that time, the devastating impact AIDS had could not have been imagined. In 20 years, a reported 52 million people have been infected with HIV and 22 people worldwide have died from AIDS related causes.
This year approximately 12,000 people participated in the event on Sunday September 23.
